Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 252:36

Sahl ibn Sa‘d al-Sa‘idi from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 252:36

Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to us, Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, that there was a dispute among the Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to some of his companions, "Go with us to reconcile between them." So he went out, and some of his companions went out with him. The time for prayer arrived, so Bilal stood and gave the adhan. Then he approached Abu Bakr and said, "Will you establish the prayer and lead the people in prayer, since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has been delayed?" He said, "Yes." So he established the prayer, and Abu Bakr stepped forward and said the takbir for the people. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appeared from the back of the mosque, moving through the rows, heading toward the qibla. When the Muslims saw him, they clapped for Abu Bakr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued until he reached the first row. When they increased the clapping, Abu Bakr turned around and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he began to retreat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) signaled for him to return to the qibla. He raised his hands, praised Allah, and then retreated again, without hesitation, until he entered the row. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stepped forward and led the people in prayer until he finished his prayer. Then he turned to the people and said, "O people, whoever encounters something in his prayer, let him say 'Subhan Allah,' for tasbih is for men, and tasfih—meaning clapping—is for women." Then he turned to Abu Bakr and said, "What prevented you from remaining firm when I commanded you?" He said, "It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in prayer."
