Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 148:100

Sa'id ibn Sinan from Anas ibn Malik (RA)

سعيد بن سنان عن أنس بن مالك

Hadith 148:100

Abu al-Rabi’ al-Zahrani narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Ma’bad ibn Hilal al-‘Anazi narrated to us, who said: A group of the people of Basra gathered, and I was among them, so we came to Anas ibn Malik and interceded with him through Thabit al-Bunani. We entered upon him, and he seated Thabit with him on the bed. I said, "Do not ask him about anything other than this hadith." Thabit said, "O Abu Hamza, your brothers from the people of Basra have come to ask you about the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, regarding the intercession." He said: Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, narrated to us, saying: "When the Day of Resurrection comes, people will surge into one another. They will come to Adam and say, 'O Adam, intercede for your descendants.' He will say, 'I am not for that, but go to Ibrahim, for he is the Friend of Allah.' So they will come to Ibrahim, and he will say, 'I am not for that, but you must go to Musa, for he is the Interlocutor of Allah.' So they will come to Musa, the Chosen of Allah, and he will say, 'I am not for that, but you must go to ‘Isa, for he is the Spirit of Allah and His Word.' So they will come to ‘Isa, and he will say, 'I am not for that, but you must go to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' So I will be approached, and I will say, 'I am for it.' I will depart and seek permission from my Lord, and permission will be granted to me. I will stand before Him in a station, and He will inspire me with praises that I am not capable of now. I will praise Him with those praises, then I will fall down prostrate before Him. It will be said to me, 'O Muhammad, raise your head, speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and you will be granted intercession.' I will say, 'O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah.' It will be said to me, 'Go, and whoever has in his heart the weight of a grain or the weight of a barleycorn of faith, bring him out.' I will depart and do so, then I will return and praise Him with those praises, then I will fall down prostrate before Him. It will be said, 'O Muhammad, raise your head, speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and you will be granted intercession.' I will say, 'O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah.' It will be said to me, 'Go, and whoever has in his heart the weight of an atom or the weight of a mustard seed of faith, bring him out of it.' I will depart and do so, then I will return and praise Him with those praises, then I will fall down prostrate before Him. It will be said, 'O Muhammad, raise your head, speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and you will be granted intercession.' I will say, 'O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah.' It will be said to me, 'Go, and whoever has in his heart the least, the least of the weight of a mustard seed of faith, bring him out of the Fire, out of the Fire, out of the Fire.'" When we returned from Anas, I said to my companions, "Do you wish to go to al-Hasan?" He was hiding in the house of Abu Khalifah among the ‘Abd al-Qays. We came to him and entered upon him, and we said, "We have come from your brother Anas, and we have not heard anything like what he narrated to us regarding the intercession." He said, "How did he narrate it to you?" We narrated the hadith to him until we reached the point where he said, "He said, 'Hih' (an expression of wonder or encouragement)." We said, "He did not add anything more than this for us."
