Hadith 160:185
Uqbah ibn Mukram narrated to us, Amr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Rafi', from al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "Indeed, Allah created Adam from dust, then He made him clay, then He left him until, when he became black mud altered in form, He created him and fashioned him. Then He left him until, when he became ringing clay like pottery, Iblis would pass by him and say, 'You have been created for a great matter.' Then Allah blew His spirit into him. The first thing that the spirit ran through was his sight and his nostrils, so he sneezed. Allah prompted him to praise his Lord, so he said, 'Praise be to my Lord.' The Lord said, 'May your Lord have mercy on you.' Then Allah said, 'O Adam, go to those people and say to them, and see what they say.' He came and greeted them, and they said, 'And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.' He came to his Lord and said, 'What did they say to you?'—and He is more knowing of what they said to him—he said, 'O Lord, when I greeted them, they said, "And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah."' He said, 'O Adam, this is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants.' He said, 'O Lord, and what are my descendants?' He said, 'Choose one of My hands, O Adam.' He said, 'I choose the right hand of my Lord, and both hands of my Lord are right.' Then Allah spread out His palm, and behold, everything that is to be of his descendants was in the palm of the Most Merciful, Mighty and Majestic is He. And behold, there were men among them upon whose mouths was light, and behold, there was a man whose light amazed Adam. He said, 'O Lord, who is this?' He said, 'Your son David.' He said, 'O Lord, how much have You set for him of life?' He said, 'I have set for him sixty [years].' He said, 'O Lord, complete for him from my life until his age is one hundred years.' Allah did so and bore witness to that. When the life of Adam expired, the Angel of Death was sent to him. Adam said, 'Has there not remained forty years of my life?' The angel said, 'Did you not give them to your son David?' He denied that, so his descendants denied; and he forgot, so his descendants forgot."
