Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 117:30

'Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, Ghassan bin Burzin—meaning al-Tahawi—narrated to us, Thabit al-Bunani narrated to us, from Anas bin Malik, who said: The companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out one day and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have perished, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" He said, "And what is that?" They said, "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy." He said, "Do you not testify that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger?" They said, "Yes." He said, "That is not hypocrisy." He said: Then they returned a second time and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have perished, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" He said, "And what is that?" They said, "Hypocrisy, hypocrisy." He said, "Do you not testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger?" They said, "Yes." He said, "That is not hypocrisy." He said: Then they returned a third time and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have perished, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" He said, "And what is that?" They said, "Hypocrisy." He said, "Do you not testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger?" They said, "Yes." He said, "That is not hypocrisy." They said, "When we are with you, we are in one state, but when we leave you, the worldly life and our families occupy us." He said, "If you were to remain in the state you are in when you leave me, the angels would shake your hands on the roads of Medina."
