Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 2:117

Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Nukri narrated to us, Shababah ibn Sawwar narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, that Ma'dan ibn Abi Talhah al-Ya'mari said: Umar ibn al-Khattab delivered a sermon and said: "I saw as if a red rooster pecked me once or twice, and I do not see that as anything but the approach of my death. If a matter hastens me, then the Caliphate is a matter of consultation among these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away while he was pleased with them. And I know that people will challenge this matter; I fought them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do that, then those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. And I bear witness regarding the governors of the provinces, for I only sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and to distribute their spoils." "And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not treat me harshly regarding anything, nor did I dispute with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding anything concerning the verse of *al-kalalah* (inheritance of one who leaves no direct descendants), until he struck my chest and said: 'The verse of the summer, which was revealed at the end of Surat al-Nisa', is sufficient for you: *They ask you for a legal ruling. Say, "Allah gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants as heirs..."* (Surat al-Nisa'). And I will judge regarding it with a judgment that will be known by whoever reads and whoever does not read; it is what excludes the father—that is how I reckon." "Beware, O people, you eat from two trees which I do not see as anything but foul: onions and garlic. For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pass by a man from whom their odor was detected, and he would be sent out to al-Baqi'. So whoever must eat them, let him kill their odor by cooking."
