Hadith 2:45
Ubayd Allah ibn Umar narrated to us, Yahya ibn Sa’id narrated to us, Hisham ibn Abi Abd Allah narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d, from Ma’dan ibn Abi Talhah, that Umar ibn al-Khattab delivered a sermon on a Friday. He mentioned the Prophet of Allah and he mentioned Abu Bakr, then he said: "I saw as if a rooster pecked me once or twice, and I do not see it as anything but the approach of my death. Some people are ordering me to appoint a successor, but Allah would not let His religion, nor His caliphate, nor that which He sent His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with, go to waste. I know that some people will criticize this matter—I struck them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam—so if they do that, then they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. If a matter hastens for me, then the caliphate is a matter of consultation among those individuals whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died while he was pleased with them. There is nothing I leave behind that is more important to me than the *kalalah* (inheritance of one who leaves no direct descendants or ascendants). I did not argue with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about anything as I argued with him about the *kalalah*, and he was not harsh with me about anything as he was harsh with me about it, until he poked his finger into my chest and said to me: 'O Umar, is the verse of the summer, which is at the end of Surat al-Nisa, not sufficient for you?' If I live, I will issue a judgment regarding it that will be followed by those who read the Quran and those who do not read the Quran." Then he said: "O Allah, I call You to witness against the governors of the provinces, for I only sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, to act justly among them, to distribute [wealth] among them, and to refer to me whatever becomes difficult for them." Then he said: "Furthermore, O people, you eat from two plants which I consider nothing but foul: this onion and garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he would find their scent on a man in the mosque, he would order him to be taken out to al-Baqi’. So whoever eats them, let him kill them by cooking."
