Hadith 2:55
Abu Khaythama narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Khazim narrated to us, al-A’mash narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, who said: And al-A’mash from Khaythama, from Qays ibn Marwan, who said: A man came to Umar while he was at Arafat and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have come from Kufa, and I left behind a man there who dictates the copies of the Quran from memory." Umar became angry and swelled up until he almost filled the space between the two sides of his saddle. He said: "Woe to you! Who is he?" He said: "Abdullah ibn Mas’ud." Umar continued to extinguish and suppress his anger until he returned to the state he was in before. He said: "Woe to you! By Allah, I do not know of anyone remaining among the people who is more entitled to that than him. I will tell you about that: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to spend the night conversing with Abu Bakr regarding the affairs of the Muslims. One night, he was conversing with him, and I was with them. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out walking, and we walked with him. Suddenly, there was a man standing and praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood listening to his recitation. When we were about to recognize the man, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Whoever is pleased to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd.'" He said: "Then the man sat down to supplicate, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to say: 'Ask, and you shall be given.'" Umar said: "I said: 'By Allah, I will go to him early in the morning to give him the good news.' I went to him early to give him the good news, but I found that Abu Bakr had preceded me to him and given him the good news. By Allah, I never raced him to any good deed except that he preceded me to it."
