Musnad Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)

Hadith 2:71

Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Sami narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Humayd, from al-Hasan ibn Salamah, that Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith over the people of Makkah. Umar arrived, and Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith met him, and he had appointed Abd al-Rahman ibn Abza as a successor over the people of Makkah. Umar became angry until he stood up in his stirrups and said, "Do you appoint Abd al-Rahman ibn Abza as a successor over the family of Allah?" He said, "I found him to be the most reciting of them of the Book of Allah and the most knowledgeable of them in the religion of Allah." Umar humbled himself for that until he settled upon his mount, then he said, "If you have said that, then I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: 'Indeed, Allah will raise up by this religion some people and bring down others by it.'"
