Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 209:30

Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 209:30

Hadaba ibn Khalid narrated to us, Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Thabit, who said: The son of Umm Salamah narrated to me that Abu Salamah came to Umm Salamah and said: "I have heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that is more beloved to me than such and such, and I do not know what he equated it with. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'There is no one who is afflicted with a calamity, then he says "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return) at that moment, then says: "O Allah, with You I seek the reward for this calamity of mine, O Allah, compensate me for it with something better than it," except that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, gives it to him.'" Umm Salamah said: When Abu Salamah was afflicted (by death), I said: "O Allah, with You I seek the reward for this calamity of mine." But my soul did not feel at ease to say: "O Allah, compensate me for it with something better than it." I said: "Who is better than Abu Salamah? Is there anyone?" Then she said it. When her waiting period (iddah) ended, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent to her to propose to her. She said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah. I have three traits: I am a woman with children, I am a woman who is intensely jealous, and I am a woman who has no guardian present here to marry me off." Umar became angrier for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than he would have been for himself when she rejected him. Umar came to her and said: "Are you the one who rejects the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with what you reject him with?" She said: "O son of al-Khattab, (it is) such and such." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to her and said: "As for what you mentioned regarding your jealousy, I will supplicate to Allah to remove it from you. As for what you mentioned regarding your children, Allah will suffice for them. And as for what you mentioned that there is no one among your guardians present, there is no one among your guardians, present or absent, who dislikes me." She said to her son: "Marry the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) off," so he married him off. He (the Prophet) said: "I have not given you less than what I gave to so-and-so." Thabit said to the son of Umm Salamah: "And what did he give to so-and-so?" He said: "Two jars in which she puts her needs, a hand-mill, and a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber." Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) departed. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit her. When she saw him, she placed Zaynab, her youngest child, in her lap. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, and when he saw her, he turned away, for he was shy and noble. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit her. When she saw him, she placed her in her lap, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned away. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit her, and she placed her in her lap. Ammar came quickly in front of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), snatched her from her lap, and said: "Give me this little girl who has prevented the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from his need." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and did not see her. He said: "Where is Zaynab?" She said: "Ammar took her." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon his wife, and she was among the women as if she were not one of them; she did not feel what they felt of jealousy.
