Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 140:42

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, 'Umar bin Yunus narrated to us, 'Ikrimah narrated to us, Yazid al-Raqashi narrated to us—at the basin of Zamzam while the people were gathered around it, from Quraysh and others—he said: Anas bin Malik narrated to me, he said: There was a man during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who would go on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah. When he returned and unloaded his mount, he would head to the Mosque of the Messenger and begin to pray in it, prolonging the prayer, until some of the companions of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) began to think that he had a merit over them. One day, he passed by while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was sitting among his companions. Some of his companions said to him, "O Prophet of Allah, this is that man." So, either the Prophet of Allah sent for him, or he came of his own accord. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw him approaching, he said, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, there is a mark of the devil between his eyes." When he stood at the gathering, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to him, "Did you say to yourself when you stood at the gathering, 'There is no one among the people better than me'?" He said, "Yes." Then he turned away and went to a corner of the mosque, drew a line with his foot, aligned his heels, and stood to pray. The Messenger of Allah said, "Which of you will stand up to this man and kill him?" Abu Bakr stood up, then the Messenger of Allah said, "Did you kill the man?" He said, "I found him praying, so I felt intimidated by him." The Messenger of Allah said, "Which of you will stand up to this man and kill him?" Umar said, "I will." He took the sword and found him standing in prayer, so he returned. The Messenger of Allah said to Umar, "Did you kill the man?" He said, "O Prophet of Allah, I found him praying, so I felt intimidated by him." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Which of you will stand up to this man and kill him?" Ali said, "I will." The Messenger of Allah said, "You are the one for him, if you catch him." Ali went, but did not find him, so he returned. The Messenger of Allah said, "Did you kill the man?" He said, "I did not know which way he went on earth." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Indeed, this is the first horn to emerge from my nation." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "If you had killed him, or if he had been killed, no two people would have differed in my nation. The Children of Israel split into seventy-one sects, and this nation—meaning his nation—will split into seventy-two sects, all of them in the Fire except for one sect." We said, "O Prophet of Allah, who is that sect?" He said, "The Jama'ah (the community)." Yazid al-Raqashi said: I said to Anas, "O Abu Hamza, and where is the Jama'ah?" He said, "With your leaders, with your leaders."
