Musnad Ahmad 27:1430

Sulayman ibn Dawud narrated to us, Isma'il informed us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Halhalah informed me, from Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn 'Ata' ibn 'Alqamah, that he was sitting with Ibn 'Umar in the marketplace, and Salamah ibn al-Azraq was beside him. A funeral procession passed by, followed by wailing. 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said: "If the family of this deceased person were to abandon wailing, it would be better for their deceased." Salamah ibn al-Azraq said: "Do you say that, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman?" He said: "Yes, I say it." He said: "I heard Abu Hurayrah—and a deceased person from the family of Marwan had died, and the women gathered to wail over him. Marwan said: 'Stand up, O 'Abd al-Malik, and forbid them from wailing.' Abu Hurayrah said: 'Leave them, for a deceased person from the family of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died, and the women gathered to wail over him. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood up to forbid them and drive them away, but the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Leave them, O son of al-Khattab, for the eye is tearful, the heart is afflicted, and the bereavement is recent."'" Ibn 'Umar said: "Did you hear this from Abu Hurayrah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Does he attribute it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then Allah and His Messenger know best."
