Musnad Ahmad 27:1718

Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Musa ibn Jubayr, from Nafi’, the freed slave of Abdullah ibn Umar, from Abdullah ibn Umar, that he heard the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: "When Allah the Exalted caused Adam, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to descend to the earth, the angels said: 'O Lord, {Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with praises and sanctify You?} [Al-Baqarah: 30]. He said: 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.' They said: 'Our Lord, we are more obedient to You than the children of Adam.' Allah the Exalted said to the angels: 'Bring forth two angels from among the angels, so that they may be sent down to the earth, and we shall see how they act.' They said: 'Our Lord, Harut and Marut.' So they were sent down to the earth. Al-Zuhrah appeared to them as a woman from among the most beautiful of humans. She came to them, and they asked her for herself. She said: 'No, by Allah, not until you speak this word of polytheism.' They said: 'By Allah, we will never associate anything with Allah.' She went away from them, then returned carrying a boy. They asked her for herself, and she said: 'No, by Allah, not until you kill this boy.' They said: 'By Allah, we will never kill him.' She went away, then returned carrying a cup of wine. They asked her for herself, and she said: 'No, by Allah, not until you drink this wine.' So they drank, became intoxicated, and fell upon her, and they killed the boy. When they sobered up, the woman said: 'By Allah, you did not leave anything that you refused to do to me except that you have done it when you were intoxicated.' Then they were given the choice between the punishment of this world and the Hereafter, and they chose the punishment of this world."
