Musnad Ahmad 27:1879

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab saw 'Utarid selling a garment of silk brocade. He came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw 'Utarid selling a garment of silk brocade. If you were to buy it and wear it for the delegations, for the 'Eid, and for Friday?" He said: "Indeed, the one who wears silk is the one who has no share [in the reward of the Hereafter]." I think he said: "In the Hereafter." He said: Then garments of silk (sira') were gifted to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He gave a garment to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, he gave a garment to Usamah ibn Zayd, and he sent a garment to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. He said to 'Ali: "Split it among the women as head coverings (khumur)." 'Umar came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard you say about it what you said, yet you sent a garment to me?" He said: "I did not send it to you for you to wear it, but rather for you to sell it." As for Usamah, he wore it and went out in it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began looking at him. When Usamah saw him staring at him, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you clothe me with it?" He said: "Split it among the women as head coverings," or similar to what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said.
