Hadith 27:359

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Sufyan—meaning Ibn Husayn—informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, who said: When Hafsa became a widow, and she had been married to Khunays ibn Hudhafa, Umar met Uthman and offered her to him. Uthman said, "I have no need for women, and I will consider it." Then he met Abu Bakr and offered her to him, but he remained silent. Umar felt hurt in his heart regarding Abu Bakr. Then, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) proposed to her. Umar met Abu Bakr and said, "I had offered her to Uthman, and he turned me down, and I offered her to you, and you remained silent toward me. I was more angry with you than I was with Uthman when he turned me down." Abu Bakr said, "Indeed, he [the Prophet] had mentioned her matter to me, and it was a secret, so I disliked disclosing the secret."
