Musnad Ahmad 27:66

Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, al-Shaybani narrated to us, from Jabalah ibn Suhaym, from Ibn Umar, who said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, forbade al-iqran (pairing two dates together while eating), unless you ask permission from your companions."
