Musnad Ahmad 25:1068

Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Dhi’b, from Sa’id ibn Khalid, from Isma’il ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Dhu’ayb, from ‘Ata’ ibn Yasar, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came—or went out to them—while they were sitting, and he said: "Shall I not tell you of the best of people in status?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "A man holding the rein of his horse in the way of Allah until he dies or is killed." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of the one who follows him?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "A man who isolates himself in a mountain pass, establishes prayer, gives zakat, and keeps away from the evils of the people." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of the worst of people in status?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "The one who asks by Allah, but is not given by Him."
