Musnad Ahmad 25:1073

Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Dhi’b, from Shu’bah: That al-Miswar ibn Makhramah entered upon Ibn Abbas to visit him during an illness, and he was wearing a garment of silk brocade (*istabraq*). He said: "O Abu Abbas, what is this garment?" He said: "And what is it?" He said: "This is *istabraq*." He said: "By Allah, I did not know of it. And I do not think the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, forbade this when he forbade it, except for the sake of arrogance and pride, and we, by the praise of Allah, are not like that." He said: "Then what are these images on the stove?" He said: "Do you not see that we have burned them with fire?" When al-Miswar left, he said: "Remove this garment from me, and cut off the heads of these figures." They said: "O Abu Abbas, if you took them to the market, would they not be more valuable with the head?" He said: "No." So he ordered the cutting off of their heads.
