Musnad Ahmad 25:1148

Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:1148

Asbat narrated to us, Abu Ishaq—meaning al-Shaybani—narrated to us, from Yazid ibn al-Asamm, who said: I came to Ibn Abbas and said: "So-and-so has gotten married." He brought food near to us, and we ate. Then he brought near to us thirteen dabb lizards, and some were eating while others were refraining. Some of those who were with Ibn Abbas said: "I do not eat it, nor do I declare it forbidden, nor do I command it, nor do I forbid it." Ibn Abbas said: "How evil is what you say! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was not sent except as one who permits and one who forbids. A dabb lizard was brought near to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he stretched out his hand to eat from it. Maymunah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is the meat of a dabb lizard.' So he withdrew his hand and said: 'This is meat that I have never eaten, so eat.' So al-Fadl ibn Abbas, Khalid ibn al-Walid, and a woman who was with them ate. Maymunah said: 'I will not eat of that which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not eat.'"
