Musnad Ahmad 25:1211

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from Humayd al-A'raj, from Mujahid, who said: I entered upon Ibn 'Abbas and said: "O Abu 'Abbas, I was with Ibn 'Umar, and he recited this verse and wept." He said: "Which verse?" I said: "{If you disclose what is in your selves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it} [Al-Baqarah: 284]." Ibn 'Abbas said: "When this verse was revealed, it grieved the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with a severe grief, and it enraged them with a severe rage. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are ruined if we are to be held accountable for what we speak and what we do, for as for our hearts, they are not in our hands.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: "Say: 'We hear and we obey.'" They said: "We hear and we obey." He said: "Then this verse abrogated it: {The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers} [Al-Baqarah: 285] up to {Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned} [Al-Baqarah: 286]." So He pardoned them for the promptings of the soul, and they were held accountable for their deeds.
