Musnad Ahmad 25:1360

Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:1360

Waki’ narrated to us, Ja’far ibn Burqan narrated to us, from Yazid ibn al-Asamm, who said: I heard him say: The dabb (lizard) was mentioned in the presence of Ibn Abbas. One of those sitting with him said: "It was brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he did not declare it lawful, nor did he declare it unlawful." He (Ibn Abbas) said: "How evil is what you say! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was only sent as one who declares things lawful and one who declares things unlawful. Umm Hufayd bint al-Harith came to visit her sister, Maymunah bint al-Harith, and with her was food containing the meat of a dabb." "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came after he had consumed his evening drink, and it was brought near to him. It was said to him: 'It contains the meat of a dabb.' So he withdrew his hand, and those who were with him ate it. If it were unlawful, he would have forbidden them from it." He said: "It is not in our land, and we find it repulsive."
