Musnad Ahmad 25:1560

Hammad ibn Usamah narrated to us, he said: I heard al-A’mash, he said: ‘Abbad ibn Ja’far narrated to us, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: When Abu Talib became ill, a group from Quraysh entered upon him, among them Abu Jahl. They said: "O Abu Talib, your nephew insults our gods, and he says such and such, and does such and such. So send for him and forbid him." He said: So Abu Talib sent for him. There was a space for a man near Abu Talib, and he (Abu Jahl) feared that if the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon his uncle, he would be more tender towards him, so he jumped up and sat in that spot. When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered, he found no place to sit except by the door, so he sat there. Abu Talib said: "O my nephew, your people are complaining about you. They claim that you insult their gods, and you say such and such, and do such and such." He said: "O my uncle, I only want them to agree to a single word, by which the Arabs will submit to them, and by which the non-Arabs will pay them the jizyah." They said: "And what is it? Yes, by your father, even ten [of them]!" He said: "La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)." He said: So they stood up, shaking their garments, saying: "Has he made the gods one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing." [Sad: 5] He said: Then he recited until he reached: "They have not yet tasted My punishment." [Sad: 8]
