Musnad Ahmad 25:191

Yahya narrated to us, from Fitr, Abu al-Tufayl narrated to us, he said: I said to Ibn Abbas: "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, performed *ramal* (brisk walking) around the House (the Kaaba), and that it is a Sunnah." He said: "They spoke the truth and they lied." I said: "How did they speak the truth and lie?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did perform *ramal* around the House, but it is not a Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his companions performed *ramal*, while the polytheists were on Mount Qu'ayqi'an. It reached him that they were saying that there was weakness in them, so he commanded them to perform *ramal* to show them that there was strength in them."
