Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)
Hadith 25:275
Yazid narrated to us, Sufyan ibn Husayn informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: A man saw a vision, so he came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: "I saw as if a canopy was dripping honey and ghee, and the people were taking from it; some taking much, some taking little, and some in between. And it was as if a rope was connected to the sky"—Yazid said once: "And as if a rope was lowered from the sky"—"so I came and took hold of it, and I ascended, so Allah raised you. Then a man came after you and took hold of it and ascended, so Allah raised him. Then a man came after both of you and took hold of it and ascended, so Allah raised him. Then a man came after all of you and took hold of it, but it broke for him, then it was joined for him and he ascended, so Allah raised him." Abu Bakr said: "Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to interpret it." He permitted him. He said: "As for the canopy, it is Islam. As for the honey and ghee, it is the sweetness of the Quran; some take much, some take little, and some are in between. As for the rope, it is that which you are upon; you ascend and Allah raises you. Then there will be a man after you upon your path, and he will ascend and Allah will raise him. Then there will be a man after both of you, and he will take hold as you both did, and he will ascend and Allah will raise him. Then there will be a man after all of you, and it will break for him, then it will be joined for him, and he will ascend and Allah will raise him." He said: "Did I get it right, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "You got some right, and you got some wrong." He said: "I adjure you, O Messenger of Allah, to tell me." He said: "Do not adjure."
