Musnad Ahmad 25:45

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Mu‘ammar and ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Mu‘ammar informed us, al-Zuhri informed us, from ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting among a group of his companions—‘Abd al-Razzaq said: "from the Ansar"—when a great star was shot, and it illuminated. He said: "What did you used to say when something like this happened during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era)?" They said: "We used to say: 'A great person is born, or a great person dies.'" I (the narrator) said to al-Zuhri: "Was it shot during the Jahiliyyah?" He said: "Yes, but it intensified when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is not shot for the death of anyone, nor for his life. Rather, our Lord—Blessed be His Name—when He decrees a matter, the bearers of the Throne glorify Him, then the inhabitants of the heaven who are next to them glorify Him, until the glorification reaches this lowest heaven. Then those inhabitants of the heaven who are next to the bearers of the Throne ask: 'What did your Lord say?' So they inform them. Then the inhabitants of each heaven inform the next, until the news reaches this heaven. The jinn snatch the hearing, so they are shot at. Whatever they bring of it as it is, it is true, but they distort it and add to it." ‘Abd al-Razzaq said: "And the jinn snatch, and they are shot at."
