Musnad Ahmad 25:475

Uthman ibn Muhammad narrated to us—and I heard it from him—Jarir narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from Ja’far ibn Iyas, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The people of Makkah asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to turn al-Safa into gold for them, and to remove the mountains from them so that they could farm. It was said to him: "If you wish, you may grant them respite, and if you wish, We shall give them what they asked for; but if they disbelieve thereafter, they will be destroyed just as those before them were destroyed." He said: "No, rather I shall grant them respite." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign." [Al-Isra: 59]
