Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:499

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Husayn ibn Abdullah narrated to me, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "When the people gathered to wash the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and there was no one in the house except his family: his uncle Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas, Qutham ibn al-Abbas, Usamah ibn Zayd ibn Harithah, and Salih, his freedman. When they gathered to wash him, Aws ibn Khawli al-Ansari—one of the Banu Awf ibn al-Khazraj, and he was a Badr-veteran—called out from behind the door to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: 'O Ali, I adjure you by Allah, and [I ask for] our share of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' Ali said to him: 'Enter.' So he entered and was present for the washing of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, though he did not handle any part of the washing himself. He [the narrator] said: He [Ali] leaned him against his chest, while he was wearing his shirt. Al-Abbas, Al-Fadl, and Qutham were turning him over with Ali ibn Abi Talib, while Usamah ibn Zayd and their freedman Salih were pouring the water. Ali began to wash him, and nothing was seen of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, of that which is seen of a dead person, and he was saying: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how pure you are, alive and dead!' When they finished washing the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he was being washed with water and lotus leaves—they dried him, then did with him what is done with the dead. Then he was wrapped in three garments: two white cloths and a Hibrah mantle. Then Al-Abbas called for two men and said: 'Let one of you go to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah'—and Abu Ubaydah used to dig graves with a flat bottom (darih) for the people of Makkah—'and let the other go to Abu Talhah ibn Sahl al-Ansari'—and Abu Talhah used to dig graves with a side niche (lahd) for the people of Madinah. Al-Abbas said to them when he sent them off: 'O Allah, choose for Your Messenger.' They went, and the companion of Abu Ubaydah did not find Abu Ubaydah, but the companion of Abu Talhah found Abu Talhah. He brought him, and he dug a grave with a side niche (lahd) for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."
