Musnad Ahmad 25:502

Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:502

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhri narrated to me, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Abdullah ibn Abbas, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said: I said to him: "O Abu al-Abbas, what do you say regarding your statement: 'No man performed Hajj without driving the sacrificial animal (Hady) with him, then circumambulated the House, except that he became in a state of Ihram for Umrah; and no pilgrim who drove the sacrificial animal with him circumambulated it, except that the Umrah and Hajj were combined for him,' while the people do not say this?" He said: "Woe to you! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out, and those of his companions who were with him, mentioning nothing but Hajj. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded: 'Whoever does not have the sacrificial animal with him, let him circumambulate the House and become in a state of Ihram for Umrah.'" So a man among them began to say: "O Messenger of Allah, is it only Hajj?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say: "It is not Hajj, but it is an Umrah."
