Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)
Hadith 25:522
Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn al-Walid ibn Nuwayfi' narrated to me, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Abdullah ibn Abbas, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said: The Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr sent Dammam ibn Tha'labah as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He arrived to him, made his camel kneel at the door of the mosque, then hobbled it, then entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was sitting among his companions. Dammam was a sturdy, hairy man with two braids. He approached until he stood over the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) among his companions and said: "Which of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." He said: "Muhammad?" He said: "Yes." He said: "O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I am going to ask you and be stern in my questioning, so do not find any offense in yourself." He said: "I will not find offense in myself, so ask about whatever appears to you." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, your God, and the God of those who were before you, and the God of those who will be after you, did Allah send you to us as a messenger?" He said: "O Allah, yes." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, your God, and the God of those who were before you, and the God of those who will be after you, did Allah command you to order us to worship Him alone, not associating anything with Him, and to cast off these rivals that our fathers used to worship alongside Him?" He said: "O Allah, yes." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, your God, and the God of those who were before you, and the God of those who will be after you, did Allah command you that we perform these five prayers?" He said: "O Allah, yes." He said: Then he began to mention the obligatory duties of Islam, one by one: Zakat, fasting, Hajj, and all the laws of Islam, adjuring him at every obligation just as he adjured him regarding the one before it. Until, when he finished, he said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I will perform these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me from, then I will neither add nor subtract." He said: Then he turned back to his camel. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said when he turned away: "If the man with the two braids is truthful, he will enter Paradise." He said: He went to his camel, untied its hobble, then left until he arrived at his people. They gathered around him, and the first thing he spoke was: "Wretched are Al-Lat and Al-Uzza." They said: "Hush, O Dammam! Beware of leprosy and vitiligo, beware of madness." He said: "Woe to you! By Allah, they neither harm nor benefit. Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, has sent a messenger and revealed to him a book, by which He has saved you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded you and what he has forbidden you from." He said: By Allah, there was not a man or woman in his settlement by the evening of that day who was not a Muslim. Ibn Abbas says: "We have never heard of a delegate of a people who was better than Dammam ibn Tha'labah."
