Musnad Ahmad 25:625

Abu Ahmad narrated to us, Abdullah ibn al-Walid al-Ijli narrated to us—and he had a dignified appearance, we saw him with al-Hasan—from Bukayr ibn Shihab, from Sa’id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Abu al-Qasim, we ask you about five things; if you inform us of them, we will know that you are a Prophet and we will follow you." He took from them the same pledge that Israel (Jacob) took from his sons when they said: "Allah is Witness over what we say." He said: "Bring them forth." They said: "Inform us about the sign of the Prophet." He said: "His eyes sleep, but his heart does not sleep." They said: "Inform us how a woman produces a female, and how she produces a male?" He said: "The two fluids meet; if the man’s fluid prevails over the woman’s fluid, it becomes a male, and if the woman’s fluid prevails over the man’s fluid, it becomes a female." They said: "Inform us what Israel forbade for himself?" He said: "He suffered from sciatica, and he found nothing that suited him except the milk of such and such—my father said: 'Some of them said: meaning camels'—so he forbade their meat." They said: "You have spoken the truth." They said: "Inform us what this thunder is?" He said: "An angel from among the angels of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, entrusted with the clouds. In his hand—or in his hands—is a whip of fire, with which he drives the clouds, steering them wherever Allah commands." They said: "What is this sound that we hear?" He said: "His voice." They said: "You have spoken the truth." They said: "Only one remains, and it is the one upon which we will pledge allegiance to you if you inform us of it, for there is no Prophet but that he has an angel who brings him the news. So inform us, who is your companion?" He said: "Gabriel, peace be upon him." They said: "Gabriel? That is the one who descends with war, battle, and punishment; he is our enemy. If you had said Michael, who descends with mercy, vegetation, and rain, it would have been [better]." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel..." [Al-Baqarah: 97] to the end of the verse.
