Musnad Ahmad 25:659

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Abu al-Tayyah informed us, from Musa ibn Salamah, who said: I performed Hajj, and Sinan ibn Salamah was with me, and Sinan had a sacrificial camel with him. It became exhausted, and he was distressed regarding its condition. I said: "If I reach Makkah, I will certainly inquire about this." He said: When we reached Makkah, I said: "Come with us to Ibn 'Abbas." We entered upon him, and there was a slave girl with him. I had two needs, and my companion had one need. He said: "Shall I leave you in private?" I said: "No." I said: "I had a sacrificial camel with me, and it became exhausted upon us, so I said: 'If I reach Makkah, I will certainly inquire about this.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent sacrificial camels with a certain man and commanded him regarding them with his command. When he turned away, he returned and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with that which becomes exhausted among them?" He said: "Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, and strike it on its side, and do not eat from it yourself, nor anyone from the people of your company." He said: I said to him: "I am in these military expeditions, and I take spoils, so I free slaves on behalf of my mother. Does it suffice for her if I free them?" Ibn 'Abbas said: The wife of Sinan ibn 'Abdullah al-Juhani was ordered to ask the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about her mother who died and had not performed Hajj: "Does it suffice for her if I perform Hajj on her behalf?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Do you see, if her mother had a debt, and she paid it off on her behalf, would it suffice for her mother?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then let her perform Hajj on behalf of her mother." And he asked him about seawater? He said: "Seawater is purifying."
