'Affan narrated to us, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions arrived, and the fever of Yathrib had weakened them. The polytheists said: "A people have come to you whom the fever has weakened." Allah informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of that, so he commanded his companions to perform *ramal* (brisk walking). The polytheists sat on the side of the *Hijr* watching them. They performed *ramal* and walked between the two corners. The polytheists said: "Are these the ones you claim the fever has weakened? These are stronger than such and such." They mentioned their statement. Ibn 'Abbas said: "Nothing prevented him from commanding them to perform *ramal* during all the circuits except out of compassion for them." I have heard Hammad narrating it from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, or from 'Abdullah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, and I have heard Hammad mentioning it from Ibn Jubayr, with no doubt about it from him.
