Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)
Hadith 25:848
Surayj and Yunus narrated to us, they said: Hammad—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us, from Abu ‘Asim al-Ghanawi, from Abu al-Tufayl, who said: I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed *ramal* (brisk walking) around the House, and that it is a Sunnah." He said: "They spoke the truth and they lied." I said: "What is this 'they spoke the truth and they lied'?" He said: "They spoke the truth, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did perform *ramal* around the House. And they lied, it is not a Sunnah. Indeed, Quraysh said at the time of al-Hudaybiyah: 'Leave Muhammad and his companions until they die the death of the *naghaf* (maggots/larvae).' When they made peace with him that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, and the polytheists were on the side of Qu’ayqi’an. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions: 'Perform *ramal* around the House for three [circuits],' and it is not a Sunnah." I said: "And your people claim that he performed *tawaf* between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel, and that it is a Sunnah." He said: "They spoke the truth and they lied." I said: "What is this 'they spoke the truth and they lied'?" He said: "They spoke the truth, he did perform *tawaf* between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel. And they lied, it is not a Sunnah. The people would not push away from the Messenger of Allah, nor would they turn away from him, so he performed *tawaf* on a camel so that they could hear his speech and their hands would not reach him." I said: "And your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed *sa’i* between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and that it is a Sunnah?" He said: "They spoke the truth. When Ibrahim was commanded to perform the rites, the devil appeared to him at the place of *sa’i* and raced him, but Ibrahim outpaced him. Then Jibril took him to the Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, and the devil—Yunus said: the devil—appeared to him, so he pelted him with seven pebbles until he went away. Then he appeared to him at the middle Jamrah, so he pelted him with seven pebbles." He said: "He laid him down on his forehead—Yunus said: And there he laid him down on his forehead—and Isma’il was wearing a white shirt. He said: 'O my father, I have no garment to be shrouded in other than this, so take it off so that you may shroud me in it.' He struggled to take it off, then he was called from behind him: 'O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision' [al-Saffat: 105]. Ibrahim turned around, and behold, there was a white, horned, wide-eyed ram." Ibn ‘Abbas said: "I have seen us following that type of ram." He said: "Then Jibril took him to the furthest Jamrah, and the devil appeared to him, so he pelted him with seven pebbles until he went away. Then Jibril took him to Mina, and said: 'This is Mina'—Yunus said: 'This is the resting place of the people.' Then he brought him to Jam’, and said: 'This is the Mash’ar al-Haram.' Then he took him to ‘Arafah." Ibn ‘Abbas said: "Do you know why it was called ‘Arafah?" I said: "No." He said: "Jibril said to Ibrahim: 'Did you recognize?'—Yunus said: 'Have you recognized?'—He said: 'Yes.' Ibn ‘Abbas said: 'From there it was called ‘Arafah.' Then he said: 'Do you know how the *talbiyah* was?'" I said: "And how was it?" He said: "When Ibrahim was commanded to proclaim the Hajj to the people, the mountains lowered their heads for him, and the villages were raised for him, so he proclaimed the Hajj to the people."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
