Musnad Ahmad 25:853

Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ibn Abi Mulaykah informed me that Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf informed him that Marwan said: "Go, O Rafi' (to his doorkeeper), to Ibn Abbas and say: 'If every man among us who rejoices in what he has been given, and loves to be praised for what he has not done, is to be punished, then we shall all be punished.'" Ibn Abbas said: "What do you have to do with this? This was only revealed concerning the People of the Scripture." Then Ibn Abbas recited: "And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], 'You must make it clear to the people...'" [Al-Imran: 187], this verse. And Ibn Abbas recited: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and love to be praised for what they have not done..." [Al-Imran: 188]. Ibn Abbas said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) asked them about something, so they concealed it from him and told him something else. They left having shown him that they had informed him about what he asked them, and they sought praise from him for that, and they rejoiced in what they had perpetrated by concealing from him what he had asked them about."
