Abdullah ibn Yazid narrated to us, Kahmas ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, from al-Hajjaj ibn al-Farafisa—Abu Abd al-Rahman said: "And I saw him on a road, and he greeted me while I was a boy"—he raised it to Ibn Abbas, or attributed it to Ibn Abbas. He said: And Hammam ibn Yahya Abu Abd Allah, the Basran, narrated to us, attributing it to Ibn Abbas. And Abdullah ibn Lahi'ah and Nafi' ibn Yazid, the two Egyptians, narrated to me, from Qays ibn al-Hajjaj, from Hanash al-San'ani, from Ibn Abbas—and I do not memorize the hadith of some of them from others—that he said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he said: "O boy, or O little boy, shall I not teach you words by which Allah will benefit you?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Preserve Allah, He will preserve you. Preserve Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Him in times of ease, He will know you in times of hardship. If you ask, ask Allah; and if you seek help, seek help from Allah. The Pen has dried regarding what is to be. If all of creation together wanted to benefit you with something that Allah has not written for you, they would not be able to do so. And if they wanted to harm you with something that Allah has not written for you, they would not be able to do so. And know that in patience over what you dislike is much good, and that victory comes with patience, and that relief comes with distress, and that with hardship comes ease."
