Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)
مسند عبد الله بن العباس بن عبد المطلب (1) ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
Hadith 25:951
'Abd al-A'la ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Yahya—meaning Ibn Abi Ishaq—from Sa'id ibn Abi al-Hasan, who said: A man came to Ibn 'Abbas and said: "O Abu al-'Abbas, I am a man who draws these images and makes these figures, so give me a legal opinion regarding them." He said: "Come closer to me." So he came closer to him. He said: "Come closer to me." So he came closer to him until he placed his hand upon his head. He said: "I will inform you of what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Every image-maker is in the Fire; for every image he made, a soul will be created for it to punish him in Hell.'" "So if you must do it, then make [images of] trees and that which has no soul."
حدثنا عبد الأعلى بن عبد الأعلى، عن يحيى يعني ابن أبي إسحاق، عن سعيد بن أبي الحسن، قال: جاء رجل إلى ابن عباس، فقال: يا أبا العباس، إني رجل أصور هذه الصور، وأصنع هذه الصور، فأفتني فيها؟ قال: ادن مني، فدنا منه ، فقال: ادن مني، فدنا منه حتى وضع يده على رأسه، قال: أنبئك بما سمعت من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " كل مصور في النار، يجعل له بكل صورة صورها نفس تعذبه في جهنم " فإن كنت لا بد فاعلا، فاجعل الشجر وما لا نفس له .
