Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:960

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far and Rawh—the meaning is the same—said: ‘Awf narrated to us, from Zurarah ibn Awfa, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When the night of my Isra’ (Night Journey) occurred, and I reached the morning in Makkah, I felt distressed by my affair, and I knew that the people would call me a liar." So he sat down, isolated and sorrowful. He said: Then the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by him. He came until he sat beside him, and said to him mockingly: "Has anything happened?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Yes." He said: "What is it?" He said: "I was taken on a night journey tonight." He said: "To where?" He said: "To Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem)." He said: "Then you reached the morning among us?" He said: "Yes." He said: He did not show that he was calling him a liar, fearing that he would deny the narration if he called his people to it. He said: "Do you see, if I call your people, will you tell them what you told me?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Yes." He said: "Come, O assembly of Banu Ka‘b ibn Lu’ayy!" He said: The gatherings were stirred up, and they came until they sat with the two of them. He said: "Tell your people what you told me." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "I was taken on a night journey tonight." They said: "To where?" He said: "To Bayt al-Maqdis." They said: "Then you reached the morning among us?" He said: "Yes." He said: Then there were those who were clapping, and those who were placing their hands on their heads, amazed at the lie—as they claimed. They said: "Can you describe the mosque to us?" Among the people were those who had traveled to that land and had seen the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "So I began to describe it, and I kept describing it until some of the description became confused for me." He said: "Then the mosque was brought while I was looking, until it was placed before the house of ‘Iqal or ‘Aqil, so I described it while I was looking at it." He said: "And there was a description along with this that I did not memorize." He said: "The people said: 'As for the description, by Allah, he has gotten it right.'"
