Musnad Ahmad 25:990

Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 25:990

Abu Kamil narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ammar ibn Abi Ammar, from Ibn Abbas—according to what Hammad reckons—that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned Khadijah, and her father used to be reluctant to marry her to him. So she prepared food and drink, and invited her father and a group of the Quraysh. They ate and drank until they became intoxicated. Then Khadijah said to her father: "Muhammad ibn Abdullah is proposing to me, so marry me to him." So he married her to him. She then perfumed him and dressed him in a garment, for that is what they used to do with the fathers. When his intoxication wore off, he looked and saw that he was perfumed and wearing a garment. He said: "What is the matter with me? What is this?" She said: "You married me to Muhammad ibn Abdullah." He said: "I marry [her] to the orphan of Abu Talib? No, by my life!" Khadijah said: "Are you not ashamed? Do you want to make yourself look foolish before the Quraysh? Will you tell the people that you were drunk?" She did not cease [persuading] him until he was satisfied.
