Hadith 28:107
Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Sa‘qab ibn Zuhayr, from Zayd ibn Aslam—Hammad said: I think it is from ‘Ata’ ibn Yasar—from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when a man from the people of the desert came, wearing a *jubbah* (outer garment) of *sijan* (a type of silk) fastened with brocade. He said: "Behold, this companion of yours intends to humble every knight, son of a knight." He said: "He means he wants to humble every knight, son of a knight, and raise every shepherd, son of a shepherd." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, took hold of the lapels of his garment and said: "Do I not see upon you the clothing of one who has no intellect?" Then he said: "When the Prophet of Allah, Nuh (Noah), peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was approaching death, he said to his son: 'I am going to relate to you the testament. I command you with two things and I forbid you from two things. I command you with *La ilaha illa Allah* (there is no god but Allah), for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on a scale, and *La ilaha illa Allah* were placed on a scale, *La ilaha illa Allah* would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a solid ring, *La ilaha illa Allah* would break them. And [I command you with] *Subhan Allah wa bi-hamdihi* (Glory be to Allah and by His praise), for it is the prayer of everything, and by it the creation is provided for. And I forbid you from *shirk* (associating partners with Allah) and pride.'" He said: I said—or it was said—"O Messenger of Allah, we have known this *shirk*, but what is pride?" He said: "Is it that one of us has two beautiful sandals with two beautiful straps?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has a suit that he wears?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has a beast that he rides?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him?" He said: "No." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, then what is pride?" He said: "Disdaining the truth and looking down upon people."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
