Hadith 28:181

Hassan narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, Huyayy ibn Abdullah narrated to me, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Hubuli, who narrated to him from Abdullah ibn Amr, that a woman stole during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Those whom she had stolen from brought her and said, "O Messenger of Allah, this woman has stolen from us." Her people said, "We will ransom her"—meaning her family. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, "Cut off her hand." They said, "We will ransom her with five hundred dinars." He said, "Cut off her hand." So her right hand was cut off. The woman said, "Is there any repentance for me, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes, today you are free from your sin like the day your mother gave birth to you." Then Allah the Almighty revealed in Surah al-Ma'idah: {But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms} [al-Ma'idah: 39] to the end of the verse.
