Musnad Ahmad 28:253

'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Hammad—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the day of Hunayn, and the delegations of Hawazin came to him and said: "O Muhammad, we are of the same root and clan, so show favor to us, may Allah show favor to you, for there has befallen us of calamity that which is not hidden from you." He said: "Choose between your women, your wealth, and your children." They said: "You have given us a choice between our lineage and our wealth; we choose our children." He said: "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours. So when I have prayed the Dhuhr prayer, say: 'We seek the intercession of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with the believers, and the intercession of the believers with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) regarding our women and our children.'" He said: So they did that. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours." The Muhajirun said: "And what belongs to us, it is for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." The Ansar said the same. 'Uyaynah ibn Badr said: "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu Fazarah, no." Al-Aqra' ibn Habis said: "As for me and the Banu Tamim, no." 'Abbas ibn Mirdas said: "As for me and the Banu Sulaym, no." The two tribes said: "You have lied; rather, it is for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O people, return to them their women and their children. Whoever holds onto anything of the spoils, he shall have from us six shares from the first thing Allah grants us as spoils." Then he mounted his riding beast, and the people clung to him, saying: "Distribute our spoils among us," until they forced him toward a thorny tree, and his cloak was snatched away. He said: "O people, return my cloak to me. By Allah, if you had as many camels as the trees of Tihamah, I would have distributed them among you, and you would not have found me to be stingy, nor cowardly, nor a liar." Then he approached his camel and took a hair from its hump, placed it between his index and middle fingers, then raised it and said: "O people, I have no share of these spoils—not even this—except for the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So return even the needle and the thread, for misappropriation (ghulul) will be a disgrace, a fire, and a scandal upon its people on the Day of Resurrection." A man stood up with a ball of hair and said: "I took this to repair the saddle-pad of a camel of mine that had a sore back." He said: "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, since it has reached what I see, I have no need of it," and he cast it aside.
