Hadith 28:287
Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib, from his father, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, who said: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed. He prolonged the standing, then he bowed and prolonged the bowing, then he rose and prolonged [it]—Shu‘bah said: And I think he said: In the prostration [he did] something similar—and he began to weep in his prostration and blow, and he was saying: "My Lord, You did not promise me this while I am seeking Your forgiveness. My Lord, You did not promise me this while I am among them." When he finished the prayer, he said: "Paradise was presented to me, to the extent that if I had reached out my hand, I would have taken from its clusters. And the Fire was presented to me, and I began to blow for fear that its heat would cover you. I saw in it the thief of the two camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I saw in it the brother of Banu Da‘da‘, the thief of the pilgrims; if he was noticed, he would say: 'This is the work of the walking stick.' And I saw in it a tall, black Himyarite woman being punished for a cat she had tied up; she did not feed it, nor did she give it water, nor did she let it eat from the vermin of the earth, until it died. Indeed, the sun and the moon do not eclipse for the death of anyone nor for his life, but they are two signs from the signs of Allah. So if one of them eclipses—or he said: If something of that is done to one of them—then hasten to the remembrance of Allah." ‘Abdullah said: My father said: Ibn Fudayl said: "Will You punish them while I am among them? Will You punish us while we are seeking Your forgiveness?" [‘Abdullah ibn Ahmad said]: My father said: Za’idah agreed with Shu‘bah, and he said: "From the vermin of the earth." Mu‘awiyah narrated it to us.
