Hadith 28:317
Waki’ narrated to us, al-A’mash narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd Rabb al-Ka’bah, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, who said: I was sitting with him in the shade of the Ka’bah while he was speaking to the people. He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on a journey, and we stopped at a place. Some of us were pitching their tents, some were tending to their livestock, and some were practicing archery, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called out: "Prayer is gathering." He said: So I went to him, and he was addressing the people, saying: "O people, there has never been a prophet before me but that it was his duty to guide his nation to what he knew was good for them, and to warn them against what he knew was evil for them. Verily, the well-being of this nation is in its beginning, and its end will be afflicted with trials and tribulations, where one will make the other seem light. A trial will come, and the believer will say: 'This is what will destroy me,' then it will pass. Then another will come, and he will say: 'This is it, this is it,' then it will pass. So whoever wishes to be distanced from the Fire and admitted into Paradise, let his death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would love to be treated. And whoever pledges allegiance to an imam, giving him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him if he is able." And he said once: "As much as he is able." When I heard this, I put my head between my knees and said: "But your cousin Mu’awiyah is commanding us [to do otherwise]?" He placed his fist on his forehead, then lowered his head, then raised it and said: "Obey him in the obedience of Allah, and disobey him in the disobedience of Allah." I said to him: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" He said: "Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it."
