Musnad Ahmad 28:403

Al-Walid ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Walid narrated to us, I heard my father mentioning it, from Abu al-Hajjaj, from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There are three things, if they are in a man, he is a pure hypocrite: if he speaks, he lies; if he promises, he breaks it; and if he is entrusted, he betrays. And whoever has one of these traits in him, he will continue—meaning—to have a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it."
