Musnad Ahmad 28:405

Isma'il ibn Ibrahim—meaning Ibn 'Ulayyah—narrated to us, Abu Hayyan informed us, from Abu Zur'ah ibn 'Amr ibn Jarir, who said: Three men from the Muslims sat with Marwan in Medina, and they heard him speaking about the signs, saying that the first of them is the emergence of the Dajjal. The men departed to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr and told him what they had heard from Marwan regarding the signs. 'Abdullah said: "Marwan has not said anything. I have memorized from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) a hadith regarding that which I have not forgotten. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Indeed, the first of the signs to emerge is the rising of the sun from its place of setting, and the emergence of the Beast in the forenoon. Whichever of them occurs before its companion, then the other is on its heels.'" Then 'Abdullah—and he used to read the scriptures—said: "And I think the first of them to emerge will be the rising of the sun from its place of setting. That is because whenever it sets, it comes beneath the Throne, prostrates, and asks permission to return, and it is permitted to return. Until, when it appears to Allah that it should rise from its place of setting, it will do as it used to do: it will come beneath the Throne, prostrate, and ask permission to return, but nothing will be replied to it. Then it will ask permission to return, and nothing will be replied to it. Then it will ask permission, and nothing will be replied to it. Until, when as much of the night as Allah wills has passed, and it knows that if it were permitted to return, it would not reach the east, it will say: 'O Lord, how far is the east! Who will be there for the people?' Until, when the horizon becomes like a ring, it will ask permission to return, and it will be said to it: 'From your place, rise.' So it will rise upon the people from its place of setting." Then 'Abdullah recited this verse: "The day that some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before, or had earned through its faith some good."
