Musnad Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas (RA)
Hadith 28:558
Ya'qub said: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Yahya ibn 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father 'Urwah, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As, who said: I said to him, "What is the most that you saw Quraysh inflict upon the Messenger of Allah, regarding what they manifested of their enmity toward him?" He said: I was present with them when their notables gathered one day in the Hijr. They mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "We have never seen anything like what we have endured from this man. He has belittled our intellects, insulted our forefathers, criticized our religion, divided our community, and reviled our gods. We have endured a grave matter from him," or as they said. He said: While they were like that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appeared to them. He approached walking until he touched the Corner (the Black Stone), then he passed by them while circumambulating the House. When he passed by them, they mocked him with some of what he said. He said: I recognized that on his face. Then he went on. When he passed by them the second time, they mocked him with the like of it, and I recognized that on his face. Then he went on. Then he passed by them the third time, and they mocked him with the like of it. He said: "Do you hear, O assembly of Quraysh? By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter." His words seized the people, such that there was not a man among them but that it was as if a bird were perched upon his head. Even the one among them who had been most severe against him before that began to appease him with the best words he could find, to the point that he would say, "Depart, O Abu al-Qasim, depart rightly guided, for by Allah, you were never ignorant." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed. When the next day came, they gathered in the Hijr, and I was with them. Some of them said to others, "You mentioned what reached you from him and what reached him from you, yet when he confronted you with what you dislike, you left him alone." While they were in that state, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appeared to them. They sprang toward him as one man and surrounded him, saying to him, "Are you the one who says such and such?"—referring to what had reached them from him regarding the criticism of their gods and their religion. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Yes, I am the one who says that." He said: I saw a man among them take hold of the collar of his garment. He said: Then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) stood before him, saying while weeping, "Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?" [Ghafir: 28]. Then they turned away from him. That was the most severe thing I ever saw Quraysh inflict upon him.
