Abu Sa’id narrated to us, Isra’il narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Maymun, from ‘Abdullah, who said: Sa’d set out to perform ‘Umrah and stayed with Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf. When Umayyah would set out for Ash-Sham, he would pass by Al-Madinah and stay with Sa’d. Umayyah said to Sa’d: "Wait until the middle of the day when the people are heedless, then I will go and you can perform Tawaf." While Sa’d was performing Tawaf, Abu Jahl came to him and said: "Who is this performing Tawaf around the Ka’bah in safety?" Sa’d said: "I am Sa’d." Abu Jahl said: "You perform Tawaf around the Ka’bah in safety, while you have given shelter to Muhammad?" They began to argue. Umayyah said to Sa’d: "Do not raise your voice at Abu Al-Hakam, for he is the master of the people of the valley." Sa’d said to him: "By Allah, if you prevent me from performing Tawaf at the House, I will surely cut off your trade route to Ash-Sham." Umayyah kept saying: "Do not raise your voice at Abu Al-Hakam," and he kept holding him back. Sa’d became angry and said: "Leave us be, for I heard Muhammad claim that he will kill you." He (Umayyah) said: "Me?" He (Sa’d) said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, Muhammad does not lie." When they left, he returned to his wife and said: "Do you not know what the Yathribi said to me?" He told her about it. When the cry for help came and they went out to Badr, his wife said: "Do you not remember what your Yathribi brother said?" He wanted not to go out, but Abu Jahl said to him: "You are one of the nobles of the valley, so travel with us for a day or two." So he traveled with them, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, killed him.
