Musnad Ahmad 26:326

Waki’ narrated to us, ‘Umar ibn Dharr narrated to us, from al-‘Aizar ibn Jarwal al-Hadrami, from a man among them whose kunya was Abu ‘Umayr, that he was a friend of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud visited him at his home, but did not find him. He asked permission to enter upon his family and greeted them, then he asked for a drink. The servant girl was sent to bring him a drink from the neighbors, but she was slow, so he cursed her. Then ‘Abdullah left. When Abu ‘Umayr came, he said, "O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, someone like you should not be treated with such jealousy; why did you not greet your brother’s family, sit down, and have some of the drink?" He said, "I did so, but I sent the servant, and she was slow—either they did not have any, or they were stingy with what they had—and the servant was slow, so I cursed her. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Indeed, when a curse is directed at the one it is directed toward, if it finds a path to him or finds a way into him, it settles; otherwise, it says: "O Lord, I was directed toward so-and-so, but I found no path to him and no way into him." Then it is said to it: "Return from where you came."'" "I feared that the servant might be excused, and the curse would return, and I would be the cause of it."
