'Affan narrated to us, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, he said: I heard Abu Ishaq narrating from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, who said: We performed Hajj with Ibn Mas'ud during the caliphate of 'Uthman. He said: When we stood at 'Arafah, he said: When the sun set, Ibn Mas'ud said: "If the Commander of the Believers were to depart now, he would have done the right thing." He said: I do not know if Ibn Mas'ud's words were faster, or 'Uthman's departure. He said: The people hurried, but Ibn Mas'ud did not exceed a trot until we reached Jam' (Muzdalifah). Ibn Mas'ud led us in the Maghrib prayer, then he called for his dinner and ate. Then he stood and prayed the 'Isha prayer, then he slept until the first light of dawn appeared. He stood and prayed the morning prayer. I said to him: You did not use to pray this prayer at this time—and he used to perform the prayer when it was bright—he said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on this day and in this place, praying at this time."
