Musnad Ahmad 26:349

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Thabit informed us, from Anas bin Malik, from Ibn Mas'ud, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The last person to enter Paradise is a man who walks once, stumbles once, and is scorched by the Fire once. When he passes it, he turns toward it and says: 'Blessed is He who has saved me from you. Allah has given me something He has not given to anyone among the first and the last.' Then a tree is raised for him, and he says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shade in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says: 'O son of Adam, perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask Me for something else?' He says: 'No, O my Lord,' and he makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else." He said: "And his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, excuses him, because he sees what he has no patience for. So He brings him near to it, and he takes shade in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree is raised for him that is better than the first, and he says: 'O my Lord, this one, so that I may drink from its water and take shade in its shade, and I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'O son of Adam, did you not covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else?' So he makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, excuses him, because he sees what he has no patience for. So He brings him near to it, and he takes shade in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree is raised for him at the gate of Paradise, which is better than the first two, and he says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree, so that I may take shade in its shade and drink from its water, and I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'O son of Adam, did you not covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'Yes, O my Lord, this one, and I will not ask You for anything else.' He says: 'Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else?' So he makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord excuses him, because he sees what he has no patience for. So He brings him near to it. When He brings him near to it, he hears the voices of the people of Paradise, and he says: 'O my Lord, admit me into it.' He says: 'O son of Adam, what will cut you off from Me? Would it please you if I gave you the world and the like of it with it?' He says: 'O my Lord, are You mocking me, while You are the Lord of the worlds?'" Ibn Mas'ud laughed and said: "Will you not ask me what I am laughing at?" They said: "What are you laughing at?" He said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed." He said: "Will you not ask me what I am laughing at?" They said: "What are you laughing at, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "At the laughter of my Lord when he said: 'Are You mocking me, while You are the Lord of the worlds?' He says: 'I am not mocking you, but I am Able to do whatever I will.'"
