Musnad ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA)

Hadith 26:399

Rawh and ‘Affan narrated to us, they said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, ‘Affan said: ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib informed us, from Murrah al-Hamadani, from Ibn Mas’ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: "Our Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, marvels at two men: A man who rose from his bedding and his quilt, from among his family and his tribe, to his prayer. So our Lord says: 'O My angels, look at My servant; he rose from his bed and his bedding, and from among his tribe and his family, to his prayer, out of desire for what is with Me, and out of fear of what is with Me.' And a man who fought in the way of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, and they were defeated. He knew what was upon him regarding fleeing, and what was for him in returning, so he returned until his blood was shed, out of desire for what is with Me, and out of fear of what is with Me. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, says to His angels: 'Look at My servant; he returned out of desire for what is with Me, and out of fear of what is with Me, until his blood was shed.'"
